SNU Statement on the Stourbridge Wildfires – Monday 17th August 2026

“Like everyone who has seen the harrowing footage and images of destruction and loss, we have been devastated to hear of the impact of the recent wildfires in Stourbridge.

Whilst it is a mercy, and we are deeply relieved, that there have been no reported casualties, we know that the impact and pain of the trauma from events such as these can run deep and be long-lasting.

The loss of a home, of belongings and of cherished memories is often immeasurable.

As a Union, we have deep roots in Stourbridge. The historic market town is not only home to one of our departments, but also of one of our flagship churches. Stourbridge Spiritualist Church recently celebrated its centenary, that I was honoured to be a part of, and is host church for our upcoming Annual General Meeting in September.

We send our deepest sympathies to those who have been affected by the fires, and healing energies to those who may be recovering from its impact, in whatever fashion. A community shaken by such events can take time to re-find its footing, but it has been encouraging to see the local support and efforts that have been undertaken to help those affected.

We would also like to acknowledge and thank the committee at Stourbridge Church for their recent fundraiser event with Mark Brandist, which has so far raised over £200 for the Stourbridge Wildfire Disaster Relief Fund. The efforts continue today, with that figure almost certain to rise.

Truly the Brotherhood of Man in action, and another example of our Spiritualist churches and centres providing service and support to their local community, whatever its needs.
